Atlantic Zone Monitoring Program (AZMP) Open Meeting

Duration: 1 pm 5 pm

Cost: Free

Location: Ford Auditorium, Bedford Institute of Oceanography,
1 Challenger Drive, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia

The Atlantic Zone Monitoring Program (AZMP) and Atlantic Zone Off-Shelf Monitoring Program (AZOMP) will host an Open Meeting to communicate ocean monitoring observations and research results to client groups. The meeting is intended to increase awareness of environmental status information, data products, and modelling tools available from Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) monitoring programs and associated projects.

In essence, the meeting will seek to narrow the gap between the supply of useful scientific data and the demand for usable decision-making information. Presentations will include brief overviews of recent environmental conditions in the Maritimes region and Labrador Sea, with a special focus on the anomalously warm oceanographic conditions on the Scotian Shelf in 2012 and the extent to which the system recovered in 2013. Highlights from the recent Aquatic Climate Change Adaptation Services Program (ACCASP) departmental risk assessment will provide longer-term context about environmental change in the region. DFO and the Marine Environmental Observation Prediction and Response Network (MEOPAR) modeling groups will present recent result that synthesize ocean observations and evaluate hypotheses about system dynamics.

Presentations will be followed by open discussion with the presenters and statements from leaders of key DFO stakeholder groups about future directions for enhancing collaboration between client groups and DFO oceanographic observing programs. COINAtlantic Geospatial Tools Training Workshop

Duration: Full day

Cost: $25

Location: Computer Lab, Room I221, Industrial Engineering Building, Dalhousie University, 5269 Morris Street, Halifax

Registration: Register for the workshop via the CZC 2014 registration webpage.

The Atlantic Coastal Zone Information Steering Committee (ACZISC) in collaboration with Gateway Geomatics is producing web-based tools to share and publish geospatial information to support coastal mapping and decision-making for the coastal zone. The Coastal and Ocean Information Network - Atlantic (COINAtlantic) project of the ACZISC is leveraging Open Standards, Open source software, and popular Internet search engines to build the tools. Tutorial style workshop sessions will be held in the morning to introduce participants to COINAtlantic tools: the GeoContent Generator (CGG) and the Search Utility (CSU). The underlying software and standards behind the COINAtlantic CGG and CSU will be introduced in the afternoon portion of the workshop. Session outcomes include: knowledge of how to use the COINAtlantic CGG and CSU; technical understanding of the COINAtlantic tools for data sharing and publishing; general knowledge of Open Standards available for sharing spatial information; and general knowledge of popular online mapping software MapServer and OpenLayers.

Registrants will be provided with full details as to time and venue location.
