MANAGING OUR OCEANS AND COASTS FOR A SUSTAINABLE
AND PROSPEROUS FUTURE

CONFERENCE PROGRAM

WELCOME FROM CZCA PRESIDENT

On behalf of the Coastal Zone Canada Association (CZCA) I am very pleased to welcome you to Coastal Zone Canada (CZC) 2008 and the Canadian Coastal Conference (CCC) 2008. Canada’s rich ocean and coastal resources are critical to its ability to build a sustainable and prosperous future in the 21st century. CZC 2008 marks thirty years since the first Canadian national conference on coastal management (the Shore Management Symposium) in Victoria in 1978, and it is an opportune time to assess how far we have come towards managing our oceans and coasts and where we are going in the future. Globally, there have been great advances in the state of ocean and coastal management, but huge challenges remain. Bounded by three oceans and the world’s largest freshwater lakes system, Canada cannot maximize its potential for prosperity and sustainability into the 21st century unless we effectively understand, protect, and manage our oceans and coastal zones in an integrated manner.

I am delighted that the CZCA and the Canadian Coastal Science and Engineering Association (CC-SEA) have collaborated to present this wonderful conference so that we can continue to keep ocean and coastal management high on the agenda of our nation and it population. I hope you all enjoy the conference and your time in beautiful Vancouver and British Columbia.

Best wishes,

Peter Ricketts, PhD
President, Coastal Zone Canada Association

CZC 2008 YOUTH FORUM

Friday May 23 to Saturday May 24, 2008
Location: Vancouver Aquarium

The purpose of the CZC 2008 Youth Forum is to bring together youth participants (including students from university, college, and high school, Aboriginal youth, and other youth) to reflect on the issues facing coasts and oceans in Canada and the world, and to focus on the ideas and perspectives that young people bring to the table. The Youth Forum will prepare a statement and call to action that will be presented to the main conference at the opening session. The CZC 2008 Youth Forum is organized by the Vancouver Aquarium.
